Reading the excerpt from “Tomboy” reminded me of when Jared McCain first came onto the basketball scene, especially before his draft into the NBA. People were hesitant to believe in the guy because of his fingernail polish and popularity on TikTok. Although he was not trying to be a “tomgirl” or anything, people were quick to judge and bully him because he did not fit the generic mold of a professional basketball player. People seem to get bullied or criticized just for doing what they like– whether that fits into gender norms or not. Same thing can be seen with Prince’s excerpt. All she was trying to do was enjoy her youth and people of all different ages would give her a hard time about it. Albeit kids can be mean, but Price depicted all of the ways that adults in her life would be judgmental towards her when she did not want to partake in the things that they wanted her to. From family to other adults, she was not able to live her life as a kid without facing backlash from other people that were more than twice her age.

Did you think I would forget? Song of the day here ya go.

As we finish up the end of Girl, Woman, Other I can’t help but thinking about my overall reactions to the book as a whole. Partially because most of the characters from the earlier parts of the book appear, but the overall thoughts I have had about the book and how they are exaggerated here in this final part. At its core, the book is great. The substance is there. My problem comes with how the information and the plot was presented. I am not the biggest fan of that. I felt this even more so with the final chapter specifically because of how much bouncing around from character to character is done. I spent a lot of the ending trying to play catch up while I tried to remember who all of these people are and what they did in their chapters. The one part that resonated more than the rest was the moment between Amma and Dominique where they are doing lines in the bathroom. The line specifically was, “no matter how long since they’ve last seen each other, the distance of three thousand miles across America, plus another four thousand across an ocean, dissolves as if it was never a barrier in the first place” (p 428). Something about that line hit me hard, and I thought about my relationships that have grown apart due to distance. I hope when I meet up with these people again we have the same thing happen to us.

My name is Zach, but I am sure you know that already. It took me so long to add these colors and everything to this site and it is still not where I want it to be, but it is better than it just being painfully white. I am a dual major in English and Education with a minor in Psychology. If I had to pick a favorite genre or type of literary piece it would probably poetry since that is what has grown on me the most since I started studying English. I got Stockholm Syndrome ‘ed into poetry, and now I think it is neat. I plan on being a teacher when I graduate.

My obvious goal for this class is to pass it. I hope to enjoy it along the way. I think it will be one of the most challenging courses I will take in my time as a student, but we will see. I am excited to partake in a rigorous research project, because it has been quite some time since I have had to do one. The last time I had to do a research project was in Community College and my professor at the time tried to fail me intentionally because she did not like my project and when I called her out on it, she made my life harder than it needed to be (it was also COVID, as if that wasn’t annoying enough). I am excited to get crunk!

I am also going to try and include a song of the day with all my posts. Here is Today’s
